Granite: The Perfect Choice for Counters

What is the most popular change most people make in their homes? New counters of course! There are many choices when it comes to selecting which material to be used when updating counters. Perhaps you are replacing the dreary laminate counters that came with your home. Or perhaps you have that butcher-block look that became quite popular in kitchen in the 1980s. Still there’s the marble bathroom counters that became quite ubiquitous throughout homes in the southeastern United States over the last twenty to thirty years.

No matter what you are updating, there are several choices that await you. While there are many choices some of the most popular counter top choices are:

  • Corian
  • Granite
  • Laminate
  • Synthetic Stone

Personally, I’ve had several upgrades in my home and looked at all the options. I’ve come to find that for me, granite the best option. Granite is classy looking with a low maintenance – just re-seal it once a year. Granite also has become much more affordable in recent years, making man-made Synthetic Stone, not much of a competitor. I also find it to be much more appealing of a look than comparably priced Corian.

In my half bath, granite was an easy choice. I loved that a kit was available for purchase from Floor and Decor. For a couple hundred bucks, I got a granite counter pre-drilled with faucet holes, a sink, a side and back splash. It comes ready to be installed, with no cutting necessary and a pretty edging pattern.

I kept waiting for them to offer a double vanity in that kit, so I could update my master bathroom. While they never did make the kit (the size of master vanities varies to much), they now offer large slabs of granite perfect for a double bathroom vanity. While Floor and Decor has always carried pieces of granite in the square foot size, the advantage with these large slabs is that there are no seems, offering a fluid, uniform look.

I had sort of been enamored with the idea of replacing my outdated master bath counter (I have laminate counters now) with concrete. However, a couple things kept me from doing so. First, although concrete is inexpensive, the process to make it into the vanity shape is pricey. Also, you have to be careful that it will fit on top of your existing cabinets. I’ve heard you must be fanatical about wiping it down each day to keep it from getting stained (so not me!). Remember how heavy they are. The other thing is, that even when sealed, if things are spilled on them, the finish can be etched away.

So, I was thrilled to find the full slabs of granite available at Floor and Decor on a recent visit. This is the perfect touch for a master bath or a kitchen counter! While the color selection isn’t huge, there is enough variety to find a pattern than will match almost any base cabinets Starting at only $4.99 square foot, only purchase what you need with very little waste!

Note: Granite slabs are not available for purchase online. Visit your local Floor and Decor store to find these granite slabs.
